Your Science is Our Passion
In the lab, one of the largest expenders of waste energy is the fume hood. To help conserve energy, enclose open hood areas to improve the air flow.  If the hood already has a safety sash, make sure that the sash is always positioned at the optimal level for efficiency. Leaving a hood wide open decreases efficiency and causes energy waste.

New Fusion Fluxes!

SPEX CertiPrep has a new line of Pure and Ultra Pure Fusion Fluxes and additives. Both lines are high purity (the ultra pure line being the purest on the market at 99.998%) and made from a "Micro Bead" formula to ensure the exact same ratio of components in each bead with no harmful dust to clog your instruments. To maintain a high level of consistency and quality, each batch is made to be exactly identical with no lot to lot variation.

Benefits of our New Fluxes:

  • Pre-Fused with additives for better accuracy
  • New Micro Beads eliminate dust that clogs equipment
  • Consistency - Each bead has the exact same ratio of components
  • Our Ultra-Pure line is the Purest on the market at 99.998% purity

  Ask a Chemist
How do I prevent my antimony oxide (Sb2O3) solution from becoming a gelatin when I dissolve it in tartaric acid?
SPEX CertiPrep Laboratory Manager Vanaja Sivakumar says, "This is a great question with a very easy solution. While (Sb2O3) dissolves easily in tartaric acid and water, the solution is clear at first but a gelatin like substance can form over time. This is a form of mold. Adding a trace amount of nitric acid to the solution can prevent this. Thanks for asking." If you have a question for our chemists, please ask!

SPEX CertiPrep Introduces New Certified Reference Material, RoHS/WEEE Check Standard!

SPEX CertiPrep is proud to introduce our new RoHS/WEEE Check Standard. This Certified Reference Material is for use in analyzing toxic metals in plastic. It is important to be RoHS/WEEE compliant because when we dispose of electrical and electronic equipment that contain these hazardous toxins it can permeate into the ground of the landfill and seep into our ground water, causing harmful effects to humans.

The RoHS/WEEE Check Standard, catalog number ROHS-25, is a 25g sample containing Br, Pb, Hg, Cr, and Cd in a matrix of Polyethylene.

New ILM 0.5.2 and ILM 0.5.3 Standards!

SPEX CertiPrep is pleased to introduce a series of brand new calibration standards for ILM 0.5.2 and ILM 0.5.3. CL-TUNE-4 is a tuning and mass calibration standard for ICP-MS. ICAL-4 and ICAL-5 are instrument calibration standards for ICP-OES that can be used separately or combined with other appropriate SPEX CertiPrep ICAL standards. We are also offering a new ICP-OES instrument calibration and verification kit, ICV-3, comprised of ICV-3 and PLSB7-2X.
Recommended reading: Green Chemistry

Here are two books you can use to learn how to decrease your lab's environmental footprint:

Methods and Reagents for Green Chemistry: An Introduction by Pietro Tundo (Editor), Alvise Perosa, and Fulvio Zecchini is "…a good starting resource for readers seeking to employ sustainable chemistry." (Journal of the American Chemical Society, January 9, 2008).

Green Chemistry Metrics by Alexei Lapkin (Editor) and David Constable (Editor). When devising green chemistry techniques, you need a way to evaluate their "greenness". This book will show you how.
Green Chemistry

The EPA's Green Chemistry Challenge promotes the "design of chemical products and processes that reduce or eliminate the use or generation of hazardous substances."  There is only one Earth, and SPEX CertiPrep has embarked on an initiative to minimize our impact on the environment.  We will investigate manufacturing techniques that are more environmentally friendly, find ways to minimize chemical waste, and reduce the paper waste generated by our offices.  As we learn, we will be offering tips to you, the laboratories, to allow you to start your own green initiatives.

Stay tuned for more detailed information on our efforts!

Are you new to the wonderful world of ICP-MS analysis?  Are you considering making the jump to an ICP-MS?  If so, then you should read Practical Guide to ICP-MS: A Tutorial for Beginners, Second Edition by Robert Thomas.  This newly revised second edition is perfect for the beginner, and includes updated information on the latest techniques and applications in many industries.
ICP, ICP/ICP-MS, and ICP-MS Grade Certified Reference Materials Is There Really a Difference?

A blind laboratory study was conducted to compare standards obtained from various manufacturers of certified reference materials. There are two goals for this study: First to objectively determine if a difference exists between an ICP grade standard and an ICP-MS grade standard and second to focus on the equivalency of the ICP-MS grade standard to the ICP/ICP-MS grade of standard. Read the Study.
